(1983) - One of the all-time great weightmen in University of Lowell's track history, Bill Haskell, Class of 1978, was a three-time All-American in the hammer throw and one of the country's top 35-pound weight throwers. The 1978 Cushing Award winner as the top male athlete at ULowell, Haskell along with teammates Marc Linscheid and Joe Brice gave the Chiefs and head coach George Davis one of the most formidable groups of weightmen ever assembled in the intercollegiate ranks.

In 1977, Haskell finished second only to Linscheid in the hammer throw as the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Championships. He represented ULowell during the indoor season at the Millrose Games and the Vitalis Olympic Invitational as a junior at the Millrose Games as a senior, finishing second in the 35-pound weight throw with a toss of 62'8.5".

A two-time Eastern League champion in the 35-pound throw, Bill still holds the school record in the event with a toss of 63'10". He twice went to the NCAA Division I National Indoor Championships in Detroit, MI finishing eighth both times.

Ranked seventh in the country by Track & Field News in the 35-pound throw during his senior year, Haskell graduated in 1978 with a BS in Civil Engineering. He later earned his MS in Plastics Engineering from ULowell in 1981.
