(1980) - Paul Sheehy performed in both baseball and basketball during his four years at Lowell State Teachers College (1954-58). His best athletic skills were displayed on the baseball diamond where he played an important role in leading LSTC to back-to-back championships in 1957 and 1958 in the New England State College Athletic Conference. He was the captain of the 1958 team and scored the winning run in the title clash at Worcester State. Sheehy saw action at third base, shortstop, second base, outfield, and pitcher with his best batting average mark coming in 1957 at .318. He earned seven varsity letters while also serving as president of the Men's Athletic Association.

Sheehy's most important contribution to higher education in the city of Lowell, though, came far from his efforts in LSTC uniforms. Sheehy, as a sponsor and chairman, paved the way for the 1973 Massachusetts legislation that created the University of Lowell from the merger of Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute.

Sheehy was a member of the (1965-72) Massachusetts House of Representatives and also served as Lowell's City Manager in 1974-75.
