A two-time New England Champion (1977 and 1978) in the pommel horse, Scott placed fifth in the NCAA Division II Championships at UCal-Northridge in 1978 to earn his All-American honors. He went to the NCAA championships in 1976 and placed 10th in the pommel horse. Twice during his four-year career under coach Dick Aronson, Williams shared the team's Outstanding Gymnast Awards.

Williams set the school record in the pommel horse with a score of 8.95. He was looked up to as a team leader and was co-captain of the team his senior year. After earning his All-American citation, he received an award from the governor's office in recognition of his accomplishment.
