UMass Lowell Athletics Hall of Fame
(1978) - A true all-around athlete, Edward J. (Eddie) Allard earned varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball as an undergraduate at Lowell Textile Institute (1927-31) after transferring from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. An outstanding quarterback and halfback, Allard led the 1928 football squad to an undefeated season (7-0-1).
A brilliant brokenfield runner and an exceptional passer, Allard was selected as an All-American Small College quarterback by Grantland Rice. He was also best known in basketball for his defensive skills as a guard and his efforts in baseball were divided between pitching and playing short-stop. Allard was the recipient of the Currier Athletic Scholarship for three years.
Upon graduation in 1931, Allard joined National Aniline & Chemical Company, a division of Allied Chemical Corp., and served at various times as a chemist, salesman, resident manager, and the New England Manager of Industrial Chemicals until his retirement in 1970.
Allard played semi-pro football in Lowell for the Laurier Club and later coached and played for the Indians. He also coached and played baseball in the greater Boston area until 1937.
Allard was president of the Lowell Tech Alumni Association from 1965 to 1967 and was a member of the original fund-raising committee to build Alumni Library which was completed in 1951.
Allard died in January 1971.
