(1986) - The University of Lowell's first NCAA Division II gymnastics champion, John Alberghini is the second member of his sport to be elected to the Hall of Fame.

A two-time New England champion (1978 and 1980) on the parallel bars, long horse (1978) and pommel horse (1980), Alberghini won the 1979 NCAA Division II parallel bars title and earned All-American honors. He was invited to compete in the NCAA Division I Championships where he placed 19th among 57 competitors.

The co-recipient of the Lester A. Cushing Award as the school's outstanding male athlete in 1980 (with hockey standout Brian Doyle, a 1985 inductee to the Hall of Fame), Alberghini set then school records in parallel bars (9.25), vaulting (9.55) and all around (50.25) during his career. A co-captain his senior year, he led the Chiefs to their first New England championship.

A four-year letterman for internationally recognized coach Dick Aronson, Alberghini competed in three NCAA championships. In addition to the 1979 NCAAs, he placed eighth on the parallel bars in 1978 as a sophomore. At the beginning of his senior year, he competed in the New England Cup competition against 1976 Olympic bronze medalist Peter Kormann and Tim Daggett, who went on to win the gold medal in 1984.
