(1988) - One of the outstanding basketball players during the early University of Lowell years, Steve Oliver was elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame in his fifth year of eligibility. He becomes the fifth member of the Class of 1979 to be inducted.
Playing during the transition period after the merger of Lowell State College and Lowell Technological Institute in 1975 and the later move up from Division III to Division II in 1977, Steve was the 11th leading all-time scorer (1312 points) and sixth in post-merger history.
A 6-3 forward, Steve ranked 15th in games played (92), 4th in field goals made (549)' 5th in field goals attempted (1099); 9th in free throws made and attempted (214 and 213, respectively); 5th in field goal percentage (.500); 9th in free throw percentage (.686); 5th in rebounding (561); ninth in assists (216); 10th in steals (93); and 7th in blocked shots (43) in addition to his scoring exploits.
Steve's top single-game scoring effort came against St. Anselm his senior season when he tallied 33 points. He had a career-high 20 rebounds against Gordon as a freshman. The Chiefs were 42-56 during his career. He set a then school record for a single game field goal percentage shooting (.900) - 9 of 10 - in one game against Massachusetts Maritime which stood until the 1987-88 season.
When he graduated, Steve was second on the University of Lowell scoring list and seventh all-time. His 14.3 career points per game average ranked second among players participating in 80 or more games. In addition to his fine play on the basketball court, Steve also lettered in tennis as a sophomore.
