(1978) - Waldo W. (Rusty) Yarnall joined the athletic staff of Lowell Textile Institute in 1927 after a professional baseball career which saw him play briefly for the Philadelphia Phillies of the National League as a pitcher. The veteran coach and Athletic Director retired from Lowell Technological Institute on June 30, 1973.

Yarnall served as the head football coach for 21 years, head basketball mentor for 20 years, and 39 years as the top man for baseball. He was appointed to the Athletic Director's position at LTI in 1960. His teams were always well coached and highly competitive for their respective schedules. One of his more memorable teams was the undefeated football squad in 1928.

He was selected to the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame for Baseball Coaches for his contributions to college baseball in 1960. The former University of Vermont standout has also been named to his alma mater's Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements as an undergraduate in football, basketball, and baseball.

The ex-Navy veteran served his country during World War II and was awarded an Honorary Alumni Membership of LTI in 1963. He and his wife were married before a baseball game on the field.
