(1980) - George Harrington, Jr. earned the nickname "Mr. Track" at Lowell Technological Institute during his undergraduate days (1967-1971). He was responsible for starting the Lowell Tech Track club and during his four years saw it grow to become a varsity sport. He was captain for two years, held five individual track records - 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, 440 yard dash, 120 high hurdles, and 440 intermediate hurdles, as well as running the anchor leg of LTI's record-holding 440 yard relay and the one mile relay teams.

In 1971, Harrington finished sixth in the 440 intermediate hurdles among all the college performers in New England at the Track Championships. He was named to the All-Eastern League team in two events during his senior year. The fleet runner had been clocked at 10.1 seconds for the 100 yard dash.

After graduation from LTI, Harrington served as an assistant coach for his alma mater for two years and helped to start the first indoor track program as well as helping a number of athletes that would late break some of his records.
