LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (8-16, 3-6 AE) returns to LeLachuer on Tuesday afternoon to kick off a five-game week. The River Hawks will take on Dartmouth College (10-11, 3-3 Ivy) on Tuesday before heading to Amherst to take on Massachusetts (10-9-1, 2-1 A10) on Wednesday afternoon. UMass Lowell finishes the week as they host conference foe UMBC (12-15, 4-5 AE) for a weekend series.

LOOKING AT UMASS LOWELL

The River Hawks enter the weekend after going 1-2 against the NJIT Highlanders over the weekend. UMass Lowell dropped game one before splitting the Saturday doubleheader in Union, N.J. Junior Cedric Rose (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the team with five RBIs over the weekend and tied a team-high four hits with three runs scored. The junior also hit two home runs over the three-game series. UMass Lowell struggled in game one but bounced back with an impressive offensive display in the first game of the doubleheader, putting up 12 runs on the defending America East champs. The series finale was a tight contest, and the hosts came away with the victory. Sophomore Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) hit two home runs in the win on Saturday, his first two of the campaign.

ON THE MOUND

Senior Joshua Becker (Burlington, Mass.) pitched an impressive game on Saturday, sitting nine hitters in 7.0 innings and allowing just four hits and one earned run. Becker improved to 3-3 on the season after the win on Saturday. Freshman LJ Keevan (Holden, Mass.) and graduate student Ryan Towle (Westfield, Mass.) combined for 11 strikeouts in 9.2 innings in the two losses over the weekend. Keevan fell to 2-3 on the year, while Towle fell to 1-4.

UMass Lowell is 10-4 all-time against Dartmouth. Tuesday's meeting will be the first time these teams have met since April of 2018, where the River Hawks claimed a 12-10 victory in Hanover, N.H. Freshman Brendan Holland (North Andover, Mass.) will get the start for UMass Lowell and will face Dartmouth's xx.

SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN

Dartmouth comes to Lowell after going 1-2 against Ivy League rival Penn over the weekend. The Big Green fell 9-4 in game one before winning game two 2-1. Dartmouth then fell in the weekend finale 10-9. Tyler Cox leads the team batting .417 on the year with team-highs in runs (21) and hits (35). Trystan Sarcone leads the pitching core with a 3-1 record on the mound. Sarcone has allowed 28 hits and 16 runs in 26.1 innings and has struck out 23 hitters this year. Justin Murray and Nathan Skinner lead the team with 28 strikeouts on the season.

Massachusetts welcomes the River Hawks after going 2-1 against St. Joseph's over the weekend. The Minutemen visit Harvard on Tuesday afternoon before hosting UMass Lowell on Wednesday. Cole Hebble leads Massachusetts hitting .392 in 19 games this season. The graduate student has 22 runs, 29 hits, 10 doubles, and 17 RBIs on the year. Drew DeMartino has a team-high 24 RBIs with nine runs and 12 hits. On the mound, Kevin Dow has a team-best 4-1 record. The senior has pitched 24.1 innings, allowing 40 hits and 12 earned runs with a team-high 26 strikeouts.

UMass Lowell is 17-11 against UMBC all-time. The River Hawks went 3-1 last season against the Retrievers and have won three straight contests. UMass Lowell has also won six of the last seven meetings between the teams.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS

UMBC comes to Lowell with a 12-15 overall record and 4-5 conference mark. The Retrievers were swept by Maine over the weekend but have picked up America East wins over Hartford and UAlbany this season. They are led by Myles Nicholson, who is batting .430 through 26 games. Nicholson has 34 runs, 46 hits, and a team-high 23 RBIs this season. On the mound, Jayden Shertel is 3-0 with a 4.15 ERA. Luke Johnson leads the team with 30 strikeouts this year. Eight other pitchers have double digit strikeouts this season.

STOLEN GOODS

As a unit, the River Hawks have stolen 49 bases on 58 attempts this season. Senior Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) has 19 stolen bases on the year in 19 attempts. Freshman Jacob Humphrey (Standish, ME.) is 14-14 on stolen base attempts in his rookie campaign. Fritz Genther is 6-8 in stolen base attempts and senior Gerry Siracusa (Kinnelon, N.J.) is 6-8 on the year.

Ryan Towle leads the pitching core with 42 strikeouts on the year. Joshua Becker and LJ Keevan have each struck out 34 and 32 hitters, respectively. Sophomore Michael Quigley (Halifax, Mass.) has sat 16 batters this season, while fellow sophomore Brendan Williams (Auburn, N.Y.) has struck out fifteen.

GOING YARD

UMass Lowell has hit a collective 24 home runs through 24 games in the 2022 campaign. Rose and Gallagher lead the team with five homers on the year. Siracusa has hit four, while freshman Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) have each hit three so far this year.
