Baseball Adds 13 Newcomers to 2026-27 Roster

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team added 13 newcomers to its roster, including two transfers, Head Coach Nick Barese announced Monday.

"With 13 new players coming in, we're excited to get going this fall and see how they stack up," Barese said. "So far, the veterans have done a great job leading and echoing the culture and standards of our program, while the new guys have been quick to acclimate. We need to replace a lot of meaningful innings both on the mound and in the field, and I'm confident this new group is going to contribute right away."

Starting with transfer players, the River Hawks add fifth-year Jake Watson (Elk Township, N.J.) and senior Patrick Chapin (Framingham, Mass.) to the squad. Watson comes to the Mill City after four seasons at DIII Rutgers-Camden.

During his time with the Scarlet Raptors, Watson set the program career record with 107 career steals and set the single-season record with 39 in 2024. The outfielder earned All-NJAC First Team and ABCA DIII All-Region Third Team honors in 2026 after hitting .371 with a .484 on-base percentage.

Chapin, a right-handed pitcher, joins the team after playing at Bridgewater State. The 6-foot-8 pitcher made 14 appearances across two seasons, striking out 42 batters in 35 innings.

Eleven freshmen join the program, starting with the No. 1 ranked recruit from Maine, according to Perfect Game. Alex Allain (Fryeburg, Maine) joins the infield group after earning four all-conference first team selections in high school. He hit .511 as a senior and leaves Fryeburg High School as the program's all-time hit leader.

Catcher Luke Borgmann (Doylestown, Pa.) hit .360 each of his last two seasons at La Salle College and served as the team captain last season. His grandfather, Glenn Borgmann Sr., played nine seasons in the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox.

Ranked as the No. 80 player in Massachusetts by Perfect Game, right-handed pitcher Max DeRoche (Braintree, Mass.) comes off a strong high school career. He pitched to a 0.55 ERA as a junior and was named a First Team Bay State League All-Star as a sophomore.

Brailin Dominguez (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) joins the River Hawks after playing high school ball for Mount Saint Charles in Rhode Island. He's ranked as the No. 3 right-handed pitcher in the state and No. 7 overall player by Perfect Game.

A family reunion happened in Lowell as catcher Kyle Doney (Lynn, Mass.) joins his brother, sophomore lefty Josh Doney (Lynn, Mass.), on the River Hawks. Kyle Doney was named the defensive player of the year at St. Mary's Lynn as a junior and a senior, and has earned multiple honorable mentions from the Boston Globe.

Joey Eberhart (Topsfield, Mass.) joins the River Hawk pitching staff after playing four seasons at St. John's Prep. The right-handed pitcher was the team captain as a senior and was ranked as the No. 57 RHP in Massachusetts by Perfect Game.

Joining UMass Lowell as a two-way player is Bodie Forsell (North Kingstown, R.I.). As a senior, he was named to the All-Division I First Team and Playoff Team. He mowed down 75 batters in just 58 innings pitched, posting a 1.09 ERA and 0.75 WHIP as a senior. From the dish, he hit .343 with 10 extra-base hits as a junior.

Simon Mele (Pittsfield, Mass.) comes to Lowell after winning three Western Massachusetts Championships with Pittsfield. The right-handed pitcher was named to the All-Western Mass First Team as a senior, and is ranked as the No. 29 RHP in the state.

Following a standout stint at Austin Prep, outfielder Ryan Moreschi (Wakefield, Mass.), joins the River Hawks. Perfect Game ranked Moreschi the No. 2 outfielder in Massachusetts and the No. 10 player overall. He earned an All-NEBJ First Team Selection last season after hitting .420 with a 1.043 OPS and 15 stolen bases.

Joining the River Hawks as the class's lone left-handed pitcher, Will Parkhouse (Torrington, Conn.) played both baseball and basketball at Kingswood Oxford. The 6-foot-4 hurler served as the team captain for both sports as a senior, also making the All-NEPSAC squads for both.

Joey Spinello (East Brunswick, N.J.) rounds out the class after stealing 30 bases as a senior. The outfielder out of East Brunswick High School was an all-conference selection as a junior and became just the second freshman in the last five years to start at East Brunswick.

The new group of River Hawks continues fall ball on Saturday with a matchup against 2026 NCAA Regional squad Northeastern. First pitch at LeLacheur Park is set for noon.
