Biography
NHL: Signed a two-year entry level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on March 29, 2017, forgoing his final season of college eligibility. Made his NHL debut on April 2nd against the New York Islanders at the Key Bank Center, registering his first career assist.
2016-17 Season: Smith ranked second on the team in scoring with 51 points and team-leading 23 goals with a team best +22 rating, playing in all 41 games in his junior campaign. Was named Hockey East Tournament MVP with a tournament-leading eight points (4g,4a) and a +7 rating in five tournament games. Became the first River Hawk since Ben Walter (2004-05) with 20 goals in the season on Sunday, March 12th in Game 3 of the HEA quarterfinals vs. UNH. His 51 points ranked seventh among league players and his 23 goals were tied for fourth best among HEA players. His eight power play goals ranked tied for sixth in Hockey East. Registered his 100th career point on an assist on Jan. 6th at UNH and scored his 50th career goal on Feb. 18th at UMass. Had points in 29 games this season with 14 multi-point efforts and six multi-goal efforts. Has tied tied a career-high with two four-point games on Dec. 31st at Dartmouth and Feb. 18 at UMass. Notched his second career hat trick on Dec. 31st in the Ledyard Classic Championship Game at Dartmouth. Was one of three River Hawks named a semifinalist for the Walter Brown Award. The River Hawks own a 24-3-2 record when Smith scores a point. Had a season-high seven-game point streak from Jan. 28th to Feb. 23rd. Ended the season with nine points (5g,4a) in the final five games.
2015-16 Season: Smith is one of five River Hawks to play in all 40 games this season and led UMass Lowell’s roster in scoring with a career-high 39 points (17g,22a) and a +16 plus/minus rating. He ranked tied for 10th in the league in scoring with 39 points. Was named to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team with five points (3g,2a) in four tournament games. Named G. Harvey Chandler Award recipient at the annual team awards banquet as the team's leading scorer. He notched his first career hat trick on January 30th vs. Arizona State. Smith amassed a point in 25 games this season and has 10 multi-point efforts to his credit. Tied a career-high with four points (1g,3a) at Minnesota Duluth on October 31st. Had a career-high 10-game point scoring streak from Oct. 31st to Dec. 5th, posting 16 points (6g,10a) in that span. Notched two goals in the 5-0 victory against Boston University in Game 2 of the Hockey East Quarterfinals at the Tsongas Center. UMass Lowell was 18-3-4 when Smith tallied a point this season. Had a season-high eight shots on goal twice (Nov. 28 vs. Brown) and (Jan. 30th vs. ASU). Has been named Hockey East Player of the Week twice this season on February 1st and March 14th.
2014-15 Season:Â Appeared in 39 games while leading the team in scoring with 35 points (16g,19a) ... Notched three points (1g,2a) in a 6-3 win over Quinnipiac on Oct. 17 ... Smith ranked tied for 13th among Hockey East players with 35 points (16g,19a), which ranked second among Hockey East rookies... His 0.90 points per games was sixth best nationally among Div. I rookies.
