HAMILTON, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell ice hockey team (2-6-0, 0-2-0 Hockey East) fell, 4-3, in overtime against Colgate on Saturday evening, splitting its two-game road series with the Raiders.
Junior Jacob MacDonald (Fort Worth, Texas) scored his third goal of the weekend and team-leading sixth of the season, while freshman Misha Volotovskii (Calgary, Alberta) netted his first collegiate goal and sophomore Nate Misskey (Melfort, Sask.) scored his first of the season to finish with two points. Sophomore Dalyn Wakely (Port Hope, Ontario), junior Libor Nemec (Bratislava, Slovakia), sophomore Josh Mori (Richmond, B.C.), freshman Kuzma Voronin (Yaroslavl, Russia) and freshman Nick Wellenreiter (Hamilton, Ontario) each added an assist.
Colgate struck first, scoring twice at 6:13 and 8:04 to take an early 2-0 lead. The River Hawks responded just over a minute later when Misskey collected a loose puck amid a chaotic sequence in front of the net and fired it past the Colgate goaltender to cut the deficit in half. UMass Lowell continued to build momentum, finding the equalizer at 16:16 as Mori sent a shot from the blue line that Volotovskii redirected into the net for his first collegiate goal. The teams headed into the first intermission tied, 2-2.
Both teams traded chances throughout a competitive second period, with the River Hawks holding a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal. Neither side could break the deadlock, however, sending the game into the third period still tied at two.
The back-and-forth battle continued until 11:44 of the third, when MacDonald capitalized on a power play, rifling a shot into the top-left corner to give the River Hawks their first lead of the night.
UMass Lowell held the advantage late into the period before Colgate found the equalizer at 18:44 to force overtime. The Raiders ultimately secured the victory 1:38 into the extra period.
Next up, the River Hawks return to conference play next weekend with a home-and-home series against New Hampshire on Friday and Saturday, November 6-7. Friday's series opener is set for 7:15 p.m. at the Tsongas Center, while Saturday's rematch will take place at 7 p.m. in Durham, N.H.
