LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell ice hockey team (2-7-0, 0-3-0 Hockey East) dropped a 3-0 decision at home against New Hampshire (4-4-1, 1-2-0 Hockey East) on Friday evening at the Tsongas Center.
Defensively, six different River Hawks picked up one block apiece, while sophomore Austin Elliott (Strathmore, Alberta) got the start in net, making 23 saves.
"Tonight was not our best effort," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "I didn't think we started poorly, as I thought the first period was a back-and-forth battle. From there, we took some untimely penalties in the second period, which seemed to drain a lot of our energy. We had to kill off a 5-on-3 and two other penalties. On the third, I think it was a missed assignment, followed by two net-front tip goals. We have to clean that up if we're going to have success tomorrow."
The two teams battled through a scoreless first period, with both sides successfully killing off a penalty. The River Hawks recorded seven shots on goal, while goaltender Elliott turned aside all 11 shots he faced to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
New Hampshire broke through with three goals in the second period, scoring at 1:56, 17:29 and 18:41 to take a 3-0 lead into the final frame.
UMass Lowell pushed back in the third, outshooting the Wildcats, 6-4, but was unable to find the back of the net. The River Hawks' best opportunity came at 12:48 when junior Dominic Payne (rang a shot off the post, as New Hampshire held on for the 3-0 victory.
Next, the River Hawks will head to New Hampshire for game two at the Whittemore Center tomorrow, November 7, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
