DURHAM, N.H. – With three players recording multi-point performances, the UMass Lowell ice hockey team (2-8-0, 0-4-0 Hockey East) fell, 5-4, in overtime against New Hampshire (5-4-1, 2-2-1 Hockey East) on Saturday night at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
Junior Jacob MacDonald (Fort Worth, Texas) led the way for the River Hawks, tallying three points on three assists, while sophomores Cole Lonsdale (Mississauga, Ontario) and Dalyn Wakely (Port Hope, Ontario) had one goal and one assist for two points apiece. Sophomore Josh Mori (Richmond, B.C.) and freshman Misha Volotovskii (Calgary, Alberta) also scored for the River Hawks, while junior Dominic Payne (North Vancouver, B.C.) and senior Jak Vaarwerk (Clarence, N.Y.) added one assist each.
Defensively, sophomore Ryan Kroll (Plainfield, Ill.) led the team with three blocked shots, while five different skaters recorded two blocks each and four added one apiece. Sophomore Austin Elliott (Strathmore, Alberta) started in goal for the River Hawks, making 34 saves.
"Nobody is ever content in a loss but tonight the compete was there," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "Several new players came into the lineup which gave our team a different look. We kept fighting back all game despite some questionable calls. We showed some heart tying the game late and I thought we got back to Lowell-style hockey. We need to learn from this overtime experience but I do believe we deserved a better fate today. We focus on our preparation for two non-conference opponents this week."
The River Hawks got off to a hot start, as Lonsdale netted his second goal of the season just 1:18 into the contest. MacDonald fed Lonsdale as he entered the offensive zone, and Lonsdale fired a shot before collecting his own rebound and burying it in the back of the net to give UMass Lowell the early 1-0 lead. New Hampshire responded at the 13:23 mark to even the score, and the teams battled through the remainder of the period to head into the first intermission tied at one.
New Hampshire took its first lead of the night with a goal at 3:47 of the second period, but Wakely answered at 13:17 with a power play goal. After MacDonald put a shot on net, Wakely collected the loose puck in front and sent it past the goaltender to even the score at two. However, the Wildcats regained the lead with a power play goal at 19:09, taking a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission.
UMass Lowell continued to battle in an action-packed third period, as Volotovskii evened the score at 3-3 with a goal at the 12:45 mark. He cleaned up a loose rebound following a MacDonald shot to tie the game with 7:15 remaining. The Wildcats responded with a goal at 16:29 to regain the lead, but Mori came through with the equalizer with just 1:29 left to play. With the River Hawks' net empty, Mori fired a wrist shot from the faceoff circle to tie the game at four and force overtime.
In overtime, the River Hawks opened with a 4-on-3 power-play advantage following a late third-period penalty. However, a UMass Lowell penalty brought play back to 3-on-3 before New Hampshire scored just 32 seconds into the extra frame to conclude the game with a 5-4 score.
Next, the River Hawks will take on Union and RPI next Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14 at home at the Tsongas Center. Game one against Union will kick off at 7:14 p.m., while Saturday's game two is set for a 4:05 p.m. puck drop. Â
