Photo Gallery (Liberty)PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The UMass Lowell women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in the final day of the Brown Invitational at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
In the first match of the day, the River Hawks fell to Liberty University, 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 17-25, 14-25) and in the night match, UMass Lowell fell to host Brown, 3-0 (11-25, 14-25, 22-25).
"Overall, we are continuing to show streaks of what we are working on and putting our game plan together," said Head Coach
Resa Provanzano. "I keep telling them, that they proved they can do it. They really came out hungry in the first match today and believing they can do it and we just have to find that chemistry right from the beginning."
In the Brown match, senior middle blocker
Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) notched a match-high nine kills and chipped in with five digs. Senior libero
Hannah Rey (San Diego, Calif.) totaled a team-high digs in the losing effort for the River Hawks. Junior setter
Kylee Chun (Las Vegas, Nevada) amassed 23 assists and nine digs running the River Hawk' offense.
In the loss to the Lady Flames, freshman outside hitter
Masha Yelsukova (Santa Clara, Calif.) notched a career and match-high 19 kills in the losing effort to go along with a .432 hitting percentage. Smith added eight kills and six digs. Rey amassed 17 digs, leading the River Hawks' defense. UMass Lowell got off to a 7-0 lead in Set 1 off the strong serving of Chun. She finished the match with a match-high 32 assists, while also adding nine digs on defense.
Chun was named to the Brown Invitational All-Tournament Team for her efforts over the weekend with 76 assists over the three matches (10 sets).
The River Hawks return to action on Friday, September 19th against Grand Canyon University (3pm) in the opening match of the Chicago State Tournament.
