River Hawks Battle to 1-1 Draw at Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (3-4-2) started America East play with a 1-1 draw at Binghamton (4-2-3). Sophomore Nina Hertz-Saebbö (Gothenburg, Sweden) fueled the River Hawks with a first-half goal, her fifth of the season.

Hertz-Saebbö has scored in every match she's played this season but one, leading the America East in goals scored. Her goal at the 17-minute mark came from an extremely narrow right-side angle.

"It was a really good start for us, and in the first half we had the upper hand," said Head Coach Mira Novak. "The only regret is that we didn't capitalize on some of the momentum we had in the first half. I'm really proud of our players and how they prepared themselves for a hard game on the road."

Sophomore Nora Belin (Stockholm, Sweden) extended her conference-leading assist total to five, setting up Hertz-Saebbö on the play. Belin also rattled off two shots on the afternoon.

In the net, junior Rachel Welch (Franklin, Mass.) pieced together a solid performance coming off her America East Goalkeeper of the Week accolade. She made three total saves.

While Binghamton scored early, the goal was waved off for offsides. The River Hawks battled back to control the ball in the attacking third in the middle part of the first half. Sophomore Emma Theorén (Sollentuna, Sweden) logged UMass Lowell's first shot at 13 minutes.

The pressure paid off and for the fifth time in six matches played this season, Hertz-Saebbö scored. From a tough angle on the right side, she lofted one into the top left corner to put the River Hawks up 1-0.

Right after the first goal, Hertz-Saebbö had another chance to score, drilling a shot off the crossbar. UMass Lowell put together a dominant first-half performance, outshooting Binghamton 9-2 in the period. The River Hawks went to the locker room up 1-0.

To start the second half, Belin helped the offense pick up right where it left off with a strong run and a shot at 50 minutes. Just a few minutes later, Welch kept the Bearcats off the board with a save.

Binghamton equalized in the 69th minute, with a goal off the foot of Taylor Gabel knotting it up at 1-1. Both teams battled back-and-forth following the equalizer, with Binghamton piling on pressure in the final minutes. However, UMass Lowell held on to get the draw.

Up next, the River Hawks travel to Orono, Maine next Sunday to take on Maine. Kickoff against the preseason conference favorites is at noon.
