AMHERST, Mass. – Six different River Hawks tallied a shot on Wednesday night, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (1-2-1) fell to the Massachusetts Minutemen (2-1-1), 1-0, in the annual Kennedy Cup match.

"I am actually so proud of the guys," said Head Coach Kyle Zenoni. "We played well tonight and good enough to get the result. Missed some clear chances and a pk, then one mistake costed us the game. UMass is a tough team to play and has gotten some great results to start the season. We are right there and I'm so proud of the guys. We just need to keep going and stay the course. We have a really tough schedule coming up with four games within 10 days. We have to rest up and get ready for a big game Tuesday night."

Leading the River Hawks' offense, junior Linus Musielak (Dortmund, Germany) finished the night with four shots, including two on goal. Junior Justin Godbout-Garon (Québec City, Canada) added two shots with one on goal of his own, while junior Jonah Straube (Frankfurt, Germany) posted two shots as well. In net, sophomore Alvaro Medrano (Guatemala City, Guatemala) finished with two saves.

Although the Minutemen put pressure on the UMass Lowell defense in the opening minutes, it was the River Hawks' junior Kanata Takahashi (Hyogo, Japan) who posted the first shot of the game with 4:40 on the clock. Massachusetts continued to control possession, firing off a pair of shots while earning the first three corners before the 30^th minute. UMass Lowell's defense continued to stand strong, as Medrano made a pair of saves to keep the hosts off the board.

In the final 15 minutes of the half, the visitors started to hit their stride on offense, beginning with a shot on target by sophomore Benjamin Inthisone (Sun Prairie, Wis.) that the opposing keeper saved. The two sides continued to go back-and-forth, with both teams logging only one more shot each, keeping the game in a scoreless draw heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, the River Hawks got to work, firing off a pair of shots, including one off the foot of Musielak that nearly found the back of the net. Moments later, however, the Minutemen struck, scoring in the 56^th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Looking to even the score, junior Justin Godbout-Garon ripped a shot in the 63^rd minute to the top of the net, but a leaping save by the hosts' keeper kept it a one-goal game.

In the final 25 minutes of action, UMass Lowell continued to find the equalizer, posting four more shots in the timeframe, but was unable to find a strong scoring opportunity, sealing the 1-0 decision.

Next up, the River Hawks return home to host Holy Cross on Tuesday, September 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. with a special Senior Day ceremony beginning 15 minutes prior.
