Box Score Highlights Head Coach Mira Novak Postgame

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (3-4-1) earned a gritty 1-0 win over New Haven (1-6-1) on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The River Hawks finished out the non-conference slate with their second straight win thanks to a second-half goal from sophomore Nina Hertz-Saebbö (Gothenburg, Sweden).

"It took us a while to break out," said Head Coach Mira Novak. "I feel like we didn't create the amount of chances we would like to. It was a little bit nervier than we would like, but I give credit to New Haven."

Midway through the second half, Hertz-Saebbö notched her fourth goal of the season off an assist from senior Diana Jedrychowski (Farmington, Conn.). Jedrychowski recorded her second career assist, and first since her freshman year.

"Nina worked really hard to get back on the field after having a hot start," Novak said on the forward, who hadn't played since August 23. "It was great for her to get another goal and do what she's good at."

UMass Lowell earned its second straight shutout, as sophomore Lucie Chumanová (Prague, Czechia) made her second start of the season between the posts. Starting the second half at goalkeeper was freshman Hannah Callaghan (Sydney, Australia). The duo had two saves apiece.

As a team, the River Hawks outshot New Haven 14-8. Seven of UMass Lowell's 14 shots were on target, as the offense continued taking quality shots.

The River Hawks logged the first shot of the match, as junior Gaby Eckroth (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) ripped one off at the six-minute mark. At 17 minutes, junior Nuala Rodgers (Dedham, Mass.) booted an arcing shot into the top right corner that was saved by the Chargers.

Neither team could find much in the way of offense in the first half. Late in the half, freshman Ines Pietikainen (Espoo, Finland) logged her first career shot with a strike that just missed to the right.

With under a minute left in the first half, Chumanová made an leaping save to keep it scoreless heading into the locker room.

At 64 minutes, sophomore Nora Belin (Stockholm, Sweden) broke away with a chance to break the tie. However, the Chargers goalkeeper stood tall and made the save to keep it scoreless.

Just a few minutes later, senior Luka Marceau (Newton, Mass.) dropped a beautiful shot towards the top right corner, but yet another save from New Haven goalkeeper Lexi Goodman kept the River Hawks off the board.

Hertz-Saebbo broke the scoreless duel with just under 20 minutes left, after Jedrychowski's looping pass allowed her to beat Goodman in a one-on-one. Following the goal, the River Hawks kept the offensive pressure on with two more shots in the next three minutes.

While New Haven put a few strong shots on goal as it tried to equalize, Callaghan stood tall to finish the shutout.

Up next, UMass Lowell begins conference play on the road at Binghamton. A 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, September 20, starts a grueling America East slate for the River Hawks, who take on all three of the top-ranked preseason squads in their first three conference matches.
