BOSTON – Redshirt freshman Elsa Freeman (Portland, Maine) of the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (5-6-4, 2-2-3 AE) earned the America East Rookie of the Week honor, the league office announced Monday. In two matches, Freeman scored two goals, including the game-winner at NJIT.
"It was a big week for Elsa," said Head Coach Mira Novak. "I'm really pleased with her scoring her first collegiate goal on Thursday. When she broke the deadlock Sunday, she kept a cool head on her finish and rightfully got rewarded. This shows her progress throughout the season and what she can do for the team."
Â
With the River Hawks locked in a 0-0 stalemate in the 61st minute at NJIT, Freeman handled a pass from junior Nuala Rodgers (Dedham, Mass.). She calmly chipped it into the top right corner to hand UMass Lowell a lead it wouldn't relinquish in the 2-0 win.
Â
Freeman's Rookie of the Week award is the first from a River Hawk since sophomore Nora Belin (Stockholm, Sweden) won it 364 days ago. Belin secured three total Rookie of the Week selections last season.
Â
Against New Hampshire on Thursday night, Freeman scored her first collegiate goal. She ripped off a shot from outside the box as it rattled in to tie the match at 3-3 in the 85th minute.
Â
Overall, the Boston College transfer logged 87 minutes across the two matches and recorded four shots, two of which were on goal. She's now scored points in three consecutive matches.
Â
UMass Lowell has a win-and-in match at home against Bryant at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 1. The Senior Day tilt will determine whether the River Hawks make the America East Women's Soccer Championship and where they'll be seeded, with seeding possibilities ranging from No. 2 to No. 6.
