River Hawks Fall to Charleston on the Road, 3-0

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (1-3-1) started a three-match road trip with a 3-0 loss to Charleston (2-2-2). The River Hawks fell despite rattling off six second-half shots.
Senior Marissa Sage (Miflord, N.H.), sophomore Nora Belin (Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Gaby Eckroth (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) led the team with two shots apiece. As a squad, UMass Lowell finished the match with four shots on goal.
After heading into the match third in the nation in total saves, junior Rachel Welch (Franklin, Mass.) made seven more, continuing a steady workload. She has 33 saves so far in 2026.
The first half started out slow for both teams, with neither team having to make a save until Welch kept the Cougars off the board with a save in the 14th minute. The River Hawks ripped off their first shot of the game at 21 minutes, as Sage helped put the pressure on. She followed it up with another shot, forcing Charleston to make a save.
With five minutes left in the first half, Welch made another save as the Cougars placed a shot in the top left corner. She weathered more Charleston attacks, making another save to send the match to halftime scoreless.
Early in the second half, both teams went back and forth. Welch made her fourth and fifth saves of the night within the first five minutes of the period. Meanwhile, Belin fired off a shot.
The Cougars struck first in the 52nd minute, with Bella Antonio scoring a goal off a Kassy Uzelman assist. Just over 30 seconds later, Charleston widened its lead to 2-0 with a Sienna Ward goal.
Sophomore Anneliese Collin (Portland, Maine) recorded a shot on goal at 64 minutes. Belin forced Charleston to make yet another save just a few minutes later. At 71 minutes, senior Diana Jedrychowski (Farmington, Conn.) logged her first shot on goal this season.
The Cougars widened the lead to 3-0 at 77 minutes.
Up next, the River Hawks travel to Amherst, Mass. to take on Massachusetts. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 6.
