AMHERST, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women's soccer team (1-4-1) dropped a 4-1 road contest to Massachusetts (4-1-0) on Sunday afternoon. The River Hawks set a season high with five corner kicks in the contest, blowing by their previous high of three.

UMass Lowell's goal came off the foot of junior Gaby Eckroth (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), who earned her first goal of the season. Eckroth finished the match with two shots on goal.

"I'm not happy with the result, and don't want to make excuses for it," said Head Coach Mira Novak. "That said, I felt our start to the game was pretty solid and created a good chance but unfortunately, we conceded first. Today showed us some of the gaps we still need to close and work on, and I believe there's more in us than what we showed today."

After entering the match leading the America East conference in assists, sophomore Nora Belin (Stockholm, Sweden) added her fourth of the year on the play. In the match, freshman Hannah Callaghan (Sydney, Australia) made her collegiate debut with four saves.

The River Hawks put the first shot on the board, as sophomore Kiera Fitzpatrick (Methuen, Mass.) made an excellent through pass to Eckroth, who had a shot just deflected by the Minutewomen goalkeeper. Senior Marissa Sage (Milford, N.H.) followed a corner with a strong shot, which was saved.

Massachusetts scored first, with a counterattack leading into a Caroline Dickson goal to make it 1-0 at 10 minutes. UMass Lowell came back with offensive pressure, earning two consecutive corner kicks at 17 minutes.

The River Hawks continued to apply pressure, finally breaking through at 32 minutes. Off of the team's season-high fourth corner of the match, Eckroth deposited a ricocheting ball into the back of the net to equalize. Belin added to her conference-leading assist total, as she set up Eckroth perfectly.

Both sides went to the locker room tied 1-1. Right at the start of the second half, Callaghan made a strong save to deny Massachusetts. However, the Minutewomen took the lead at 55 minutes, with Monica Curry slotting one into the right side to make it 2-1.

A handball gave Massachusetts a penalty kick, which Amelia Deren connected on to make it 3-1. Curry made it 4-1 with 15 minutes left in the match. The River Hawks kept pushing, as Fitzpatrick rattled off a shot that bounced off both the crossbar and the post.

Up next, the River Hawks travel to take on in-state rival Stonehill. Kickoff in Easton, Mass. is set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 10.
