Women’s Soccer Begins Road Trip with Charleston

LOWELL, Mass. – After dismantling Merrimack 5-2 on Sunday, the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (1-2-1) hits the road to take on Charleston (1-2-2) in Mount Pleasant, S.C., at 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 30. The showdown begins a three-match road stretch for the River Hawks.
Uncharted Territory
For the first time in the program's Division I history, the River Hawks will play a match in the state of South Carolina. UMass Lowell's only other DI match against a team from the state was in 2023, when the team played No. 15 South Carolina.
Spreading the Love
In the win over Merrimack, three River Hawks recorded both a goal and an assist. Sophomore Nora Belin (Stockholm, Sweden), sophomore Nina Hertz-Saebbö (Gothenberg, Sweden) and senior Luka Marceau (Newton, Mass.) all hit the mark. It's the first time in program history the River Hawks had three players get a goal and an assist in the same match. No. 1 Stanford is the only other team to accomplish the feat this season.
On Point
As a team, the River Hawks lead the America East Conference and are 30th in the nation in shot accuracy. Out of the team's 34 shots, 20 of them were on target.
Stacking up the Saves
While she didn't start against Merrimack, junior Rachel Welch (Franklin, Mass.) still remains towards the top of the nation in many save categories. Welch is fourth in the nation with 8.67 saves per match and is third with 26 total saves.
Scoring Threat(s)
UMass Lowell is the only America East team to have three or more players with multiple goals so far this season. Senior Marissa Sage (Milford, N.H.), Hertz-Saebbö and Marceau have all found the back of the net more than once this year.
Striking Sage
Just four matches in, Sage has been having a career year. The midfielder has scored three goals and notched an assist, easily doubling her point totals from the previous three seasons combined. The senior is perfect on shot accuracy, with all four of her shots being on goal.
