River Hawks Drop A Pair at Maine

ORONO, Maine -- The UMass Lowell baseball team suffered two losses to Maine in an America East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The River Hawks (7-25, 4-7) trailed 7-4 before the Black Bears (6-22, 5-5) pulled away for the 18-4 victory, and the hosts held on the finale to pull out the 5-3 win.

GAME 1
Maine took a 1-0 lead before Ciaran Devenney (Manalapan, N.J.) sent his second home run of the season to knot the score in the second. The Black Bears took the lead back with six in the bottom of the frame, but the River Hawks battled back in the third.

After Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) singled and stole his 11th base of the season, Oscar Marchen (Miami, Fla.) doubled him home and got to third on a passed ball. Sacrifice flies by Steven Passatempo (Medford, Mass.) and Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) cut the gap to 7-4.

The Black Bears added to the lead with runs in the third, fourth and eight innings. Gallagher and Marchena both picked up two hits for the visitors in the effort.

GAME 2
After Maine jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) trimmed the gap in half with a two-run homer in the fourth frame, scoring Marchena.

The hosts pushed the buffer to 5-2 before Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) singled home Ted Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) in the sixth inning. Castellanos recorded two base knocks in the game to pace the River Hawk offense.

The teams wrap up their threee-game set tomorrow at noon.
