LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman midfielder Courtney Coleman (Antioch, Ill.) tallied her first career goal as the UMass Lowell women's soccer team (4-7-2, 2-3-0 AE) suffered a 3-2 loss against Stony Brook (6-7-2, 3-1-0) Sunday afternoon at Cushing field.

"It's unfortunate we got a 1-0 lead six minutes in and lost it because usually we can make those goals stand up" said Head Coach Joel Bancroft. "I thought the first 10-15 minutes of the second half we began to pull the game back and the response was good. When you give up the third goal of the game the game tends to be over but credit our group for making it a 3-2 match. I thought we were really seeking out that equalizer and we came up just short."

Junior Megan Rauseo (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore Lauren Aldrich (Southampton, Mass.) each picked up their first point of the year with an assist a piece in the tilt.

The River Hawks notched their quickest goal of the season after junior Rachel Morrier (Plaistow, N.H.) gave her team a 1-0 lead at 5:05 in the opening frame. Aldrich sent a shot high from the top of the box that skimmed the hands of goalkeeper Cara Gallagher before it landed at the feet of Morrier who then tapped it into the net.

Raven Edwards and the Seawolves knotted the score at 1-1 moments later when Edwards out ran Schneider to a loose ball before netting the equalizer. Stony Brook tacked on their second goal of the period thanks to Sam Goodwin who gave her club a 2-1 lead in the 42nd minute.

The visitors continued with their offensive pressure as Amy Thompson's second period goal extended the teams lead to 3-1 off a free kick. Thompson's tally would ultimately register as the game winner as the Seawolves push their win streak to three.

UMass Lowell was able to cut the deficit to one with 15 minutes remaining in regulation after Coleman's shot from the top of the box went top shelf.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Schneider (Bridgewater, Mass.) totaled three saves in the match, while her counterpart recorded two.

The River Hawks will hit the road for a Thursday showdown at Hartford in a 6 p.m. tilt on October 13.
