Debiais, Fecteau Star as UMass Lowell, Bentley Share Peter King Memorial Title

Debiais ties for first with 73-70; Fecteau stellar with 74-74

Senior Andrew Fecteau: Consecuive rounds of three-over 74 to place tied for fourth.

Senior Sylvain Debiais (St. Jean de Monts, France) finished tied for first place as the UMass Lowell golf team placed in a share of first at the Dowling College Peter King Memorial Tournament Friday and Saturday at the par-71 Long Island National Golf Course.

UMass Lowell finished with a composite score of 302-298 for a 300 and shared the team lead with Bentley (300-300—600), but it was the Falcons which captured the trophy via the fifth-player tiebreaker.

Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) placed third with rounds of 298-307—605) while Daemen College (N.Y.) took fourth with a 303-313—616 and Goldey-Beacom fifth with a 303-314—617.

The Tournament included 65 players representing 13 colleges.

Bentley emerged with the team title as its fifth player, senior Dan McQueen, shot rounds of 78-79—157, to edge UMass Lowell's No. 5, senior Jordan Traa (Calgary, Alta.), who carded an 80-79—159.

Debiais, the medalist at last week's Bentley Cape Cod Classic, shot rounds of two-over 73 and 70 (143) and shared first place with Shane Dobesh of Roberts Wesleyan College, who fired a 74-69—143. Dobesh, however, won medalist honors when he shot a four on the second hole of the tiebreaker while Debiais carded a five.

Senior Andrew Fecteau (Newbury, Mass.) enjoyed another solid weekend as he shot rounds of 74-74—148 to place in a tie for sixth place. Sophomore Kevin Fay (Lawrence, Mass.) placed in a tie for 17th place with a 75-80—155 while sophomore Harry Hulme (Manchester, England), returning from an injury sustained three weeks ago, placed tied for 33rd with an 83-75—158.

“I felt we should've won two of the three tournaments we've played in, but we've been without Harry for three of them,” said head coach Jim Mahoney. “In one of them we had to play with four guys. But they've been playing really well and our situation has been far from perfect. Sylvain has been steady as a rock, as has Andrew Fecteau. But I'm very happy with the way we've been playing. I think we're on our way.”

UMass Lowell, ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA East Region poll, enters the Le Moyne College Mike Bello Invitational next Saturday.
