Sylvain Debiais (St. Jean de Monts, France) captured medalist honors for the second time in three weeks to lead the UMass Lowell golf team to fifth place at the Le Moyne College Mike Bello Invitational at the par 72 Timber Banks Golf Course.
UMass Lowell placed fifth in the 17-team field (92 players) with a 305 for the first round and a 299 for Monday's round (604). Bentley won the team title with a 287-299—586 and edged Concordia (N.Y.) College, which finished runner-up with a 290-299-589. Nyack (299-304—603) and Roberts Wesleyan (300-303—603) tied for third place.
“Anytime you shoot under 300, you're doing alright,” said head coach
Jim Mahoney.
Debiais shot a 70 in Sunday's first round, good for a tie for fourth place, and followed with a sterling three-under 69 (139) Monday to match Jeff Schaller of Concordia, who scored a 68-71—139 and force a playoff hole.
Debiais, who fell one stroke short in the second playoff hole for medalist honors last week at the Dowling Peter King Memorial, birdied the first playoff hole (three) while Schaller missed a put to shoot a four.
“What is amazing about Sylvain is that he's been sick with coughing and chills for the second week in a row,” Mahoney said. “Yesterday he didn't think he could play at all, but he really went out and played really well. He has a remarkable form of concentration and sticking to his job. I think the fact that he was sick slowed him down and he made some terrific shots. He has a fantastic short game. He didn't get into any trouble. He just stuck to his game.”
Debiais has finished in first or tied for first in his last three tournaments. He was also the medalist at the Bentley Cape Cod Classic on Mar. 30, and had won medalist honors in three tournaments last year.
