UMass Lowell drops a 6-2 decision to Lynn University
Late inning runs tagged UMass Lowell baseball with its second loss in three games on its annual southern sojourn.
Lynn University scored runs in their last four turns with the bat en route to a 6-2 victory over the River Hawks Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton, Florida.
The loss drops UMass Lowell's record to 5-4, Lynn University improves to 13-6.
The River Hawks face Mercy College in a doubleheader, at noon, Sunday in Fort Pierce Florida.
The Fighting Knights broke a two-all tie with a pair of runs in the seventh inning and then added two more for insurance in the eighth.
Enrique Perez and Kamm Washington each had three hits and an RBI as Lynn University pounded UMass Lowell pitching for 14 hits. Four players had multi-hit games, six different players drove in runs.
UMass Lowell managed only three hits in the ball game.
The River Hawks jumped on top the first time they came to bat. Sophomore shortstop Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) singled to center on the second p[itch of the ballgame. He advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a senior third baseman Pat Devlin (Tewskbury, Mass.) sacrifice fly.
The Knights tied the game in the home half of the fifth on two bunts singles, a stolen base and bouncing ball single through the right side. River Hawk starter Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) induced a double play grounder to third base to get out of the inning with no additional damage.
Toyfair ran out of good fortune in the sixth inning. The home team took the lead on a two out single through the right side. That ended the senior's day. He exited after battling through 5.2 innings. The righthander allowed nine hits and a walk, he struck out four.
Down but not out, the River Hawks tied the game in the seventh inning. Junior Greg Wilson's (Medford, Mass.) pinch hit single brought home senior James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) who had started the rally working a one out walk. 2-2.
River hawk reliever Mike Sloban took the loss allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in one-third of an inning of work.
Lynn University starter Jed Vandernaald got the win working 7.1 innings. He gave up three hits and one earned run.
After Sunday's doubleheader against Mercy College, the River Hawks have an off day, Monday, before facing Lynn University a second time on Tuesday.
UMass Lowell will not play at LeLacheur Park until March 27 when they host Merrimack.
