UMass Lowell pounds out 28 hits, tops Mercy College, 8-6 and 12-3.
Two four-run innings keyed the first game, 8-6, win and in the nightcap it was more of the same, 12-3.
“We swung the bats really well, today, one through nine (in the lineup,)” says UMass Lowell baseball Coach Ken Harring. “We stepped up and hit in key situations.”
UMass Lowell improves to 7-4, taking three of their first five on the Florida sojourn; Mercy College falls to 1-4-1.
The River Hawks pounded out 15 hits in game one, including six doubles and a home run, against Mustang pitching. Everybody in the starting lineup had at least one hit, six players had multi-hit games.
The loudest hit of the afternoon came off the bat of senior third baseman Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) His fifth inning three-run line drive homerun to right center put the River Hawks on top to stay.
UMass Lowell had come to bat trailing, 1-0. Sophomore Kelly Rooney (Upton, Mass.) opened the inning with a double and freshman Joe Consolmagno (Worcester, Mass.) followed with a single to set the stage for Devlin's bomb.
UMass Lowell added another run before the inning was over on a sophomore Pat Parker (Merrimack, N. H.) RBI single to center.
Devlin was not done; he opened the River Hawks' four-run seventh inning with a single, his second hit of the game.
Single runs crossed the plate on a double by sophomore Jimmy Ricoy (Lowell, Mass.), and a sophomore Matthew Sanchez (Sunrise, Fla.) single. Sophomore catcher Jacob O'Keefe (Wellington, Fla.) put an exclamation point on the uprising with a two-run double. 8-1.
The runs were insurance and it turned out the policy was needed. Mercy responded with five runs in their final turn with the bat before reliever senior Mike Sloban (Merrimac, Mass.) recorded the final two outs.
“He got a double play ball to end it,” says Harring, “like a veteran is supposed to.”
UMass Lowell starter Shane Beauchemin (Manchester, N. H.) picked up his third win of the young season pitching into the seventh. The sophomore right hander went 6-plus innings allowing four hits, a walk and two earned runs. Beauchemin struck out seven.
“(Beauchemin) mixed his pitches extremely well,” says Harring.
Devlin was the offensive star with two hits, two runs scored and three driven in.
Consolmagno, sophomore Geoff DeGroot (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Ricoy, Parker, and Sanchez also had two hit ballgames. Consolmagno, DeGroot, Ricoy, freshman Matt Mottola (Newburyport, Mass.), O'Keefe and Rooney all banged out doubles.
Mustang starter James Patterson worked the first four innings and took the loss. Jesus Jaile had two of Mercy's seven hits. Ken Post had two RBI.
Game two followed a similar modus operandi as the River hawks banged out 13 hits including four doubles.
Trailing 2-0, the River Hawks, playing the nightcap as the home team chipped away with a run in the first on a sac fly and then struck for three runs in the second inning. Sophomore Ryan Gendron (Nashua, N. H.) put UMass Lowell on top, 3-2, with a line drive two-run double to center. Gendron later scored on a Consolmagno single.
After the Mustangs narrowed the River Hawk lead to one, UMass Lowell added two in the home fourth both crossing the plate on a DeGroot double to right.
A four-run fifth inning put the game out of reach. Mottola drove in the first with a double and came around to score on a sophomore Sam Johnson (Wakefield, R. I.) single. Two additional runs were added to the thanks to Mercy fielding miscues, 10-3.
The River Hawks put the lumber away after adding two more runs in the sixth inning. The first scored on an infield error, the second on a Consolmagno single, his third hit of the ball game, his fifth hit of the day.
“He's on fire,” says Harring. “(Consolmagno) has really picked us up. He's playing beyond his years, he's fun to watch.”
DeGroot, hitting in the three-hole with senior James Katsiroubas (Milton, Mass.) sidelined with a minor injury, also had three/five hits in the game/day. DeGroot, Consolmagno and Gendron each had two RBI. Johnson scored three runs.
Senior right hander Taylor Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.) picked up the win, his first in two years, with six solid innings of work. He allowed four hits, a walk and two earned runs while striking out four.
“He mixed his pitches and really competed,” says Harring of Robinson who battled injuries a year ago. “He showed his veteran presence.”
Junior Mike Calzetta (Lawrence, Mass.) closed it out pitching an uneventful seventh inning.
Mercy starter Joseph O'Neill took the loss. He allowed 11 hits and nine runs, seven of which were earned. He walked two and struck out two.
The River Hawks, after five games in three days, get a breather. Monday is a day off; Tuesday they face Lynn University a second time this spring in Boca Raton, Florida.
UMass Lowell will not play at LeLacheur Park until March 27 when they host Merrimack.
