BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman forward Ioanna Papatheodorou (Nea Erithraia, Greece) of the UMass Lowell women’s soccer team earned America East awards for both Rookie of the Week and Co-Offensive Player of the Week, as reported by the league office Monday morning.
Papatheodorou has earned three selections as Rookie of the Week through the 2021 fall season so far. The Offensive Player honor marks the first of her UMass Lowell career. This week, she shares that title with Vermont’s Alyssa Oviedo.
The awards were granted following a stellar week in America East competition, where she scored game winning goals in both River Hawk matches. The first came in the 88th minute of UMass Lowell’s contest against New Hampshire on Thursday, resulting in a 2-1 victory. She followed that performance with another score in the 79th minute on the road at UMBC Sunday afternoon to clinch a 1-0 win.
Papatheodorou leads the America East in total goals with eight and ranks second in shots with an average of 3.27 per game. She’s been accurate with the ball at her feet as well, sitting third in the league standings in shots on goal, forcing the keeper to work on 18 of her 36 attempts.
For her accolades, Papatheodorou has been named the River Hawk of the Week as well.
The "River Hawk of the Week" is chosen in voting by the UMass Lowell Athletic Communications staff. It honors the top athlete, male or female, based on performance during the previous week of competition.
