LOWELL, Mass. – Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass.) was named the Player of the Week and the River Hawk of the Week following his strong performance at the plate, earning the title for the first time this season.
Maiola paced the River Hawks to their second consecutive conference series win with two victories against UAlbany over the weekend, as the team outscored the Great Danes, 24-4, including an 18-0 win the series finale.
At the plate, Maiola batted .545, going 6-for-11 and recording two hits in each game. The junior drove in five runs and scored four times, as well, including a three-run homer in the finale. In the first game, the left fielder broke the scoreless tie with a two-run double in the seventh inning to spark UMass Lowell's win.
In game two, the North Reading, Mass. native went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run, and completed the weekend with a 2-for-3 performance with three RBI and three runs in the record-setting day on Sunday.
Maiola's three-run shot in the ninth set the program's DI single-game mark for scoring and runs in an inning, at 18 and 10, respectively. This week marks the first America East award for Maiola and UMass Lowell's third Player of the Week this season.
The "River Hawk of the Week" is chosen in voting by the UMass Lowell Athletic Communications staff. It honors the top athlete, male or female, based on performance during the previous week of competition.
