A day after Ivan Abramovic (Zagreb, Croatia) of the UMass Lowell men's soccer team was named America East Rookie of the Week, he was awarded with the first River Hawk of the Week of the 2016-17 season.
Â
Abramovic led the River Hawks to a 2-0 week with six points, including two goals in the 3-0 win at Monmouth on August 28.
Â
His first career goal came in the 20th minute and ended up being the game-winning tally, as his squad produced its first clean sheet of the season. The Zagreb, Croatia native added his score in the 87th minute to secure the victory.
Â
Abramovic also recorded two assists in the opening weekend of play, as well, setting up two Wuilito Fernandes goals. His helpers came on the game-winning goal at Northeastern and when Fernandes built a 2-0 buffer in the first half at Monmouth.
Â
The forward became the first River Hawk to score two goals in one game since Homero Morais scored two at Stony Brook in 2013. Also, Abramovic tallied five points in a single time, marking the first time the feat has been achieved in the Division I era.
The "River Hawk of the Week" is chosen in voting by the UMass Lowell Athletic Communications staff. It honors the top athlete, male or female, based on performance during the previous week of competition. Because of the unique accomplishment the staff chose to give the honor to the entire team.
Â
UMass Lowell will be back in action on September 2 under the lights of Cushing Field for the first time this season, as the Seton Hall Pirates make the trek to Lowell for the 7 p.m. tilt.Â
