Jak Vaarwerk Named 2026-27 Team Captain

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell ice hockey Head Coach Norm Bazin has named senior Jak Vaarwerk (Clarence, N.Y.) as the lone team captain for the 2026–27 season.
The ironman has never missed a game in his UMass Lowell career, battling through injuries while continuing to play at a high level. He has appeared in 107 career games, totaling 51 points on 17 goals and 34 assists. Last season, Vaarwerk reached career highs in all three categories, finishing second on the team with 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists.Â
"We are excited to name Jak Vaarwerk as our captain for the 2026–27 season," said Bazin. "He has earned the respect of his teammates through his commitment, competitiveness and leadership. We believe he represents the values of our program and will do an outstanding job leading this team."
As captain, he will help guide a River Hawks team featuring a mix of returning veterans and 10 newcomers as they look to continue the tradition of excellence associated with UMass Lowell hockey.
"Being captain is about more than wearing a letter," Bazin added. "It's about setting the standard every day, holding each other accountable and making sure we are all working toward the same goal."
Vaarwerk and the River Hawks will kick off the season at home against Clarkson on October 9.Â
