HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior Jacob MacDonald (Fort Worth, Texas) scored twice, as the UMass Lowell ice hockey team (2-5-0, 0-2-0 Hockey East) earned a 4-3 victory at Colgate (0-7-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) on Friday evening at Class of 1965 Arena.
With his performance, MacDonald now has five goals in six games this season to lead the team. Freshman Kolin Sisson (Lincoln, R.I.) also found the back of the net for the first time in his career, while sophomore Tobias Pitka (Poprad, Slovakia) added his second goal of the season. Junior Daniel Buchbinder (Clarence Center, N.Y.), sophomore Nate Misskey (Melfort, Sask.), sophomore Dalyn Wakely (Port Hope, Ontario), freshman Misha Volotovskii (Calgary, Alberta), senior Jak Vaarwerk (Clarence, N.Y.) and freshman Nick Wellenreiter (Hamilton, Ontario) each recorded an assist in the victory.
Defensively, junior Dominic Payne (North Vancouver, B.C.) led the River Hawks with two blocked shots, while five other skaters recorded one block apiece. Senior Cole Moore (Toronto, Ontario) earned the start in net, making 17 saves to pick up the win.
"We'll take some positives out of tonight," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "We were able to battle back on a couple occasions and we were able to close out a game. We also had contributions from up and down the lineup. Real good road win. Tomorrow will be a new test."
Colgate opened the scoring at the 2:45 mark, but MacDonald responded with a power-play goal at 14:18 to even the score at one. The Raiders regained the lead late in the period, finding the back of the net at 18:29 to take a 2-1 advantage into the first intermission
The River Hawks erupted for three goals in the second period to take a 4-3 lead, while also successfully killing off three Colgate power plays. UMass Lowell found the equalizer at 5:28 when Sisson, while shorthanded, took a pass from Vaarwerk along the boards, carried the puck into the offensive zone, beat a defender and made a move around the goaltender to tie the game at two. Less than two minutes later, MacDonald struck again, one-timing a faceoff win by Wakely into the top-right corner at 6:54 to give the River Hawks their first lead of the night.
Colgate answered at 8:24 to knot the score at three, but UMass Lowell quickly regained the advantage. Pitka capitalized on a shorthanded breakaway, finding the back of the net to put the River Hawks ahead 4-3. The teams traded chances for the remainder of the period, but the score held heading into the third.
Both teams battled through a scoreless third period, with the River Hawks holding an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Each team also successfully killed off a penalty in the final frame as UMass Lowell maintained its one-goal lead to secure the 4-3 victory.
The River Hawks return to Class of 1965 Arena tomorrow, Saturday, October 31, for the second game of the series. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
