Providence jumped out to an early lead with a goal at the 1:42 mark, but the River Hawks killed off a penalty at 5:39 to keep the deficit at one. The Friars added two more goals at 7:28 and 9:29 before McGraw answered with his first career goal as a River Hawk, firing a wrist shot past the goaltender off passes from Wakely and Wellenreiter. Providence responded with two more goals at 13:13 and 15:09 to take a 5-1 lead into the first intermission.
The River Hawks came out strong to start the second period, as Wellenreiter scored his first career goal just 59 seconds into the frame. After collecting a rebound off a Nate Misskey shot, Wellenreiter turned and fired a quick shot into the back of the net to cut Providence's lead to 5-2. Moore made six saves after entering in goal to start the period, helping the River Hawks keep the Friars off the scoreboard and carry momentum into the third.
The River Hawks battled throughout the third period, outshooting the Friars 10-5 while looking to close the gap. UMass Lowell had opportunities on two power plays within the first 10 minutes of the frame but was unable to find the back of the net. The River Hawks later killed off a Providence power play beginning at the 16:04 mark, but the Friars held on for the 5-2 victory.
