NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Junior Marinho Oldenburg (Utrecht, Netherlands) earned the first brace career, as the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (2-2-2) cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Iona Gaels (1-2-2) on Saturday afternoon, tying the Division I record for goals scored. The River Hawks last scored five goals in a 5-0 victory over CCSU on September 16, 2023.

"I'm so happy for the guys," said Head Coach Kyle Zenoni. "They played really well and finally scored some goals. We had so many good performances tonight and everyone was just into the game. We were a team today that played with a lot of pride. It showed today. If we keep coming together, playing as a team, and just stay the course we are tough to play against. This is a special group when we do it together. We need to rest up and get ready for Tuesday now."

Oldenburg, whose two goals were the first of his career, was one of four River Hawks to find the back of the net. Joining him, junior Sho Kinjo (Nara, Japan) also scored the first goal of his career, while senior Linus Musielak (Dortmund, Germany) added a goal and an assist and senior Ethan Agyare-Danso (Etobicoke, Canada) scored his second goal of the season. Also earning points in the match, juniors Justin Godbout-Garon (Québec City, Canada) and Kanata Takahashi (Hyogo, Japan) both added two assists, while senior Alex Champagne (Pembroke Pines, Fl.) and juniors Santiago Somorrostro (Nashua, N.H.) and Moritz Aé (Leipzig, Germany) each finished with one assist.

The River Hawks got straight to work on offense, firing off the first two shots of the game in the opening five minutes, including one by junior Adam Abdelaal (Orlando, Fl.) that took an incredible effort from the opposing goalie to keep the visitors from getting on the board. Despite Iona's defense holding on, UMass Lowell continued to put the pressure on, as junior Cristiano Da Silva (Port Coquitlam, British Columbia) added a shot, followed by one another one from Abdelaal and one from Oldenburg, to keep possession on the hosts' end of the pitch.

In the 33^rd minute, the River Hawks finally struck with Oldenburg's first goal of his career. After an Iona defender headed the ball out of the box, Takahashi collected the ball and dished a pass to Oldenburg, setting up the junior to lace a shot past the keeper and make it a 1-0 game. Less than three minutes later, Somorrostro used a corner kick to send the ball into the box, and after it bounced once, Kinjo turned around and sent it straight past the keeper to double the lead. UMass Lowell wasn't done there, though, as Oldenburg completed the brace in the 38^th minute off assists from Godbout-Garon and Takahashi, giving the team a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Iona was quick to strike, scoring just over five minutes into the half to make it a 3-1 game. The River Hawks, however, refused to let the Gaels get any closer, as Aé booted the ball past midfield to Godbout-Garon, who quickly found a wide open Musielak, setting up the junior for the team's fourth goal of the match. Seven minutes later, Agyare-Danso added his first goal of the match, with assists from Musielak and Champagne, extending the team's lead to 5-1 with 13 minutes to play. In the final minutes, Iona added one more, but UMass Lowell prevented anymore scoring opportunities, sealing the 5-2 victory.

Next up, the River Hawks make a quick trip to North Andover to take on the Merrimack Warriors on Tuesday, September 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Martone-Mejail Field.
