River Hawks Host CCSU in 2026 Home Opener

LOWELL, Mass. – Coming off a two-game trip to Texas to open the season, the UMass Lowell men's soccer team (0-1-1) hosts the CCSU Blue Devils in the regular season home opener on Thursday, August 27. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Cushing Field, with a pregame ceremony to honor Toby Forsythe beginning 15 minutes prior.
LAST TIME OUT
The River Hawks enter Thursday's match after falling to Houston Christian, 1-0, on Sunday night. Against the Huskies, sophomore Alvaro Medrano (Guatemala City, Guatemala) made his first start of the season, making five saves in 90 minutes of action. Offensively, junior Adam Abdelaal (Orlando, Fl.) logged a shot on goal, while four other River Hawks posted a shot.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Through the first two games of the season, junior Santiago Somorrostro (Nashua, N.H.) paces the team with a goal, three shots, and two shots on goal, while junior Saihaj Kailay (Belleville, Ontario) adds the team's lone assist. In net, junior Aé Moritz (Leipzig, Germany) and sophomore Alvaro Medrano (Guatemala City, Guatemala) have each made five saves in one start.
FRESH FACES
The newest members of the team have already made an impact on the program, as seven newcomers have made at least one start this year, while five have started in both games so far. Beyond the starters, three other newcomers have appeared in both games for the River Hawks off the bench.
FOREVER A RIVER HAWK
In July, the River Hawks lost a friend and teammate when junior goalkeeper Toby Forsythe (Columbus, Ohio) passed away in a tragic accident. The River Hawks will honor him every game this season by wearing warm-up shirts with his name and number before every match. Additionally, all of the River Hawks' jerseys now feature a "Toby 32" patch on the sleeve.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
CCSU enters Thursday's contest with a 1-0 record, coming off a 3-2 victory over Manhattan in their season opener. Despite trailing 2-0 early in the second half, the Blue Devils rallied with three goals in seven minutes to earn the victory. Miguel Gonzalez Pecharroman, Ben-Martin Wilkinson, and Jaran Klevberg all scored a goal, while Santiago Marin added the lone assist. In net, two keepers earned playing time, with Carter Fitzgerald earning the win with three saves and one goal allowed.
