BOSTON, Mass. – Following a productive week at the plate that helped spark the River Hawks' offense, freshman Cal Chance (Wolcott, Conn.) was selected as the America East Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.
Chance made his presence felt at the plate last week, as the freshman went 11-for-18 for a .611 batting average, while scoring five runs and driving in seven. The Connecticut native also tallied two doubles and posted a .722 slugging percentage along with a .650 on-base percentage. Posting three multi-hit performances during last week's games, Chance's best performance came in a midweek battle against Stonehill, where he went 5-for-6 at the plate with a double, four runs scored, and four RBI. His five-hit effort marked the second time this season that Chance has reached that total, tying a UMass Lowell Division I program record for hits in a single game.
At this stage of the season, Chance owns a .315 batting average with a .765 on-base plus slugging percentage. The catcher has started in 33 games, totaling a team-high 47 hits, as well as stealing the most bases on the team with 11. The freshman has also added 29 runs scored, 25 RBI, nine doubles, and a triple. On the field, Chance has posted a .939 fielding percentage with 84 putouts and eight assists.
