LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell ice hockey team (1-4-0, 0-1-0 Hockey East) fell to No. 7/9 Providence (4-0-0, 1-0-0 Hockey East), 3-0, on Friday night at the Tsongas Center.
Defensively, sophomore Nate Misskey (Melfort, SK) and junior Libor Nemec (Bratislava, Slovakia) led the River Hawks with two blocked shots apiece, while eight other skaters recorded one. Sophomore Austin Elliott got the start between the pipes, making a season-high 36 saves.
"I'd like to say it was a good hockey game, but I thought we played one out of the three periods the right way and unfortunately it didn't go our way, so we probably got what we deserved here tonight," said Head Coach Norm Bazin.
Despite an early Providence goal at the 3:08 mark, the River Hawks battled back, keeping the Friars off the scoreboard for the remainder of the period while generating chances on two power plays. Their best opportunity came at 10:46 on the man advantage, when Delaney fired a wrist shot through traffic and off the post. UMass Lowell also killed off a penalty later in the period, heading into the first intermission trailing 1-0.
The River Hawks came out firing in the second period, outshooting Providence 22-12. UMass Lowell generated several quality scoring chances, including a slapshot from Félix Plamondon at 7:21 that created a rebound opportunity for Wakely, whose follow-up was turned aside. After killing off another penalty, the River Hawks threatened again when Wakely tested the Providence goaltender at 15:07. Delaney also had several good looks in front of the net as UMass Lowell continued to apply pressure, but the River Hawks could not find the back of the net, leaving the 1-0 deficit intact heading into the third period.
The fight continued in the third period and the River Hawks killed off two more penalties to finish the night 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, but Providence goals at the 4:20 and 10:43 marks secured the 3-0 final score.
The River Hawks return to action tomorrow, October 24, traveling to Providence for a 6 p.m. rematch at Schneider Arena.
