LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell ice hockey team (1-3-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East) fell to Arizona State (4-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC), 4-2, on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center.
Sophomores Dalyn Wakely (Port Hope, Ontario) and Josh Mori (Richmond, B.C.) each scored their first goal of the season, while freshman Félix Plamondon (Saint-Raymond, Quebec), freshman Kolin Sisson (Lincoln, R.I.), freshman Kuzma Voronin (Yaroslavl, Russia) and junior Jacob MacDonald (Fort Worth, Texas) each recorded an assist.
Defensively, sophomore Nate Misskey (Melfort, Sask.) and Plamondon led the way with three blocked shots apiece, while Wakely added two and four other River Hawks recorded one. Senior Cole Moore (Toronto, Ontario) made his first start in net for the River Hawks, finishing with 23 saves.
"I thought overall we played better today than we did yesterday," said Head Coach Norm Bazin. "I thought we had better puck pressure, I thought we were better in the faceoff circle. We had better opportunities and we had plenty of shots to convert. We did not execute. Some were pretty close and close doesn't count, so no moral victories here. We have to get better next week."
Arizona State opened the scoring at 3:22 of the first period, but the River Hawks generated plenty of chances, recording 16 shots on goal in the frame. Lowell carried that momentum into the second period, with Wakely tying the game just 1:35 in. After collecting a pass from MacDonald, Wakely drove into the slot and fired a shot over the goaltender's pad to make it 1-1.
The Sun Devils regained the lead on a power-play goal late in the period before adding another tally with just 13 seconds remaining to take a 3-1 advantage into the second intermission.
The River Hawks continued to push in the third, outshooting Arizona State, 11-5. Mori brought Lowell within one at 3:05, collecting a loose puck along the blue line and quickly snapping a wrist shot past the goaltender to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Arizona State answered at 9:34, scoring directly off a faceoff to restore its two-goal lead. Despite continued back-and-forth action down the stretch, the River Hawks were unable to close the gap, falling 4-2.
UMass Lowell will open Hockey East play next week with a home-and-home series against Providence. The River Hawks will host the Friars in the series opener at 7:15 p.m. before traveling to Providence for a 6 p.m. game two matchup.
