Baseball 2025 Season In Review

LOWELL, Mass. – Entering the second season under Head Coach Nick Barese, the UMass Lowell baseball team faced a challenging, 53-game schedule.

The River Hawks posted an 18-35 overall record with an 8-16 America East record over the course of the season.

UMass Lowell began its season on a strong note in Charleston, S.C., where the team competed at the Swig & Swine College Classic against Mercyhurst, Ball State and Towson. The River Hawks took two victories over the weekend with a 5-3 outcome in the season opener versus Mercyhurst on Feb. 14, as well as a 12-6 final result against Ball State on February 15 in the second contest of the season.

AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

After the opening slate, senior Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) was off to a hot start for the River Hawks, as the infielder notched a .667 batting average and a slugging percentage of 1.33%. The senior went 6-for-9 at bat with three RBI, four runs, three doubles and one home run, collecting the first America East Player of the Week honors.

Before finishing the 17-game road trip, the River Hawks earned their first conference victory of the season with a 4-3 decision to split the doubleheader against UMBC on March 15. In the twin bill, senior Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) posted four hits with a double, triple, two RBI and two runs. Redshirt junior Brendan Holland (North Andover, Mass.) was a staple on the defensive side, as the pitcher posted a win in six innings pitched with seven strikeouts.

UML vs. HOLY CROSS - 3/19 RECAP

At long last, the River Hawks returned to Lowell, hosting Holy Cross and Le Moyne in their first home games of the regular season. UMass Lowell put together three straight victories at Edward A. LeLacheur Park. A close, hard-fought battle against Holy Cross ended in a triumph for the River Hawks, after senior Jake Fitzgibbons (Franklin, Mass.) walked it off on a single that flew past the glove of the diving left fielder, helping secure the 8-7 outcome in the home opener.

An electric weekend for Luccini versus Le Moyne topped the four-game win streak for UMass Lowell, grabbing a 13-6 outcome and 9-4 final result in the doubleheader on March 22. The outfielder was perfect at the plate, going 6-for-6 and adding four RBI and five runs with two home runs, a triple and a double. Due to his stellar week, Luccini garnered America East Player of the Week honors, batting .692, (9-13) while slugging 1.615 and posting an on-base percentage of .778 in the matchups against Holy Cross and Le Moyne. He was also named the River Hawk of the Week.

UML vs. BRYANT - 3/28 RECAP

Next came the series against defending conference champion Bryant, on March 28. UMass Lowell took a big edge in the series on the Bulldogs, following a Friday doubleheader sweep with a 15-6 outcome in game one and a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

A 13-hit and 15-run first game gave the River Hawks a 15-6 final result over Bryant, as junior Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) fronted the squad with two hits, five RBI, three runs and one homer. In game two, the sides were even most of the game before senior Conor Kelly (Hopkinton, Mass.) waited for his pitch, crushing the ball to deep right-center and allowing junior Zachary Scott (Lunenburg, Mass.) to race home and seal the 5-4 victory in walk-off fashion. Holland, on the bump in game two of the doubleheader, tossed 11 strikeouts in seven innings pitched, which tied the UMass Lowell Division I record for strikeouts in a game.

BINGHAMTON RECAP 

On April 25, the River Hawks began their longest homestand of the season with eight games. UMass Lowell commenced the stretch by hosting Binghamton for a weekend series. The Bearcats secured game one, 8-1, but the River Hawks bounced back with a 5-4 victory on April 27 to knot the series, before closing the match up in game three in a 5-2 decision for a 2-1 series advantage. 

Freshman Brayden Cali (Taunton, Mass.) impacted game two against the Bearcats going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and one run. Kelly added two hits and two RBI in the final game versus Binghamton, helping UMass Lowell ultimately secure the series.  Holland went six innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out nine batters in game two versus Binghamton, with graduate student Dylan Bedder (New Providence, N.J.) recording two saves in the final contests.

On a hot streak, UMass Lowell collected its third straight win with a 15-7 decision in the midweek battle against Quinnipiac on April 29. Sophomore River Hart (Nashua, N.H.) led the pack, recording three hits and four RBI with two home runs in the contest, while sophomore Rowan Masse (Manchester, Ct.) added two hits, two RBI and two runs, and Cali went 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs.

As the season progressed, the River Hawks prepared for their final homestand of the 2025 campaign. Despite falling to Boston College on May 10, the River Hawks were able to honor nine seniors and three graduate students with a Senior Day ceremony.

ALL-ACADEMIC RELEASE 

Concluding the 2025 season, Fish’s consistency all season helped earn a spot on the America East All-Academic Team. The senior played in 49 games, starting in 46 of them, finishing with a team-high, as well as being tied for first in the conference for doubles (17). Leading the team in batting average (.313) and RBI (34) was a huge part of the New Hampshire native’s play style on offense, plus adding 57 hits, 28 runs and two home runs to his overall stats. Fish was also able to become the first UMass Lowell River Hawk in Division I history to record 200 hits over his career.

Luccini led the team in OPS (.913), runs (40), triples (5), on-base percentage (.403), and slugging percentage (.510). The outfielder also played in all 53 games this season, while posting 56 hits, 31 RBI, 13 doubles and seven home runs. Not only did he lead the team in triples, but Luccini finished tied in first for triples in the America East. Luccini was also able to reach his 200th collegiate game played for UMass Lowell this past season.

Out of the bullpen, Holland finished with 72.1 innings pitched, collecting a team-high 71 strikeouts on the season. The pitcher appeared and started in 14 games, earning three wins and walking 22 batters. The Massachusetts native finished in fifth in innings pitched and batters struck out in the America East.
