TOWSON, Md. – Senior Riley Lawhorn (Amherst, N.H.) finished with a team-high three goals, as the UMass Lowell men's lacrosse team (3-2) fell to the Queens University of Charlotte Royals (2-3), 12-11, in overtime on Sunday afternoon.

"Credit to Queens who played a really good game today," said Head Coach Drew Kelleher. "We played well in spots, but need to play more complete games to win consistently at this level. We have a really good group, and we need to learn to play well for a full 60 minutes."

Although the River Hawks led by as many as four, the Royals outscored UMass Lowell, 4-1, including the only three goals of the third quarter, until the final moments of the second half. With six seconds remaining in regulation, Queens turned the ball over, setting up Lawhorn to score the game-tying goal with no time remaining and to send the game into overtime. The River Hawks' defense continued to excel in the extra period, making two big stops, but with a minute to play Ethan Scaffidi tallied the game-winner.

Lawhorn, who added an assist for a four-point day, was one of eight River Hawks to record a point. Graduate student Garrett Murphy (Billerica, Mass.) tallied a goal and two assists, while sophomore Colby Frigon (Providence, R.I.) and freshman Alex Lafreniere (Chelmsford, Mass.) each added two-goal performances. Sophomores Johnny Soi (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) and James Donnelly (Ottawa, Ontario) each chipped in a goal and an assist while freshman Danny Burke (Eden Prairie, Minn.) added a goal, and freshman Tommy Cassar (Kings Park, N.Y.) earned his first career assist.

The River Hawks came out of the gates firing, scoring twice in just over two minutes to open the game, thanks to goals off the sticks of Lafreniere and Soi. Although Queens added one to cut the lead in half, Donnelly immediately countered to put his squad up 3-1. The Royals added one more before UMass Lowell exploded on offense, scoring three straight to earn its largest lead of the day, 6-2. In the final minutes of the first, the two sides went back and forth, with the opposition scoring two goals, interrupted by one from Frigon, to make it 7-4 after one.

In the second, the Royals began to rally, scoring three straight to pull even. The River Hawks, however, were up for the challenge, as Murphy set up Lafreniere with an open look, who launched his shot past the keeper for the lead with 6:14 on the clock. Moments later, Lawhorn struck again, extending the lead to two with four minutes remaining. Meanwhile, the defense locked down, with True making three saves in the final minutes to keep the 9-7 lead heading into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Queens hit their stride, scoring just over a minute into the period to make it a one-score difference. Despite the River Hawks not allowing another goal until midway through the period, the Royals rejected a handful of their scoring opportunities before adding two more of their own late in the third to take their first lead of the day, 10-9, with 15 minutes to play.

In the fourth, UMass Lowell evened the score with 11:11 on the clock, thanks to a goal by Frigon. Queens answered two minutes later to retake the lead, 11-10, before both sides clamped down on defense, setting up for the last-second goal by Lawhorn.

Next up, the River Hawks wrap up the three-game road trip at Fairfield on Saturday, March 8. The opening faceoff is scheduled for noon at Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.
