Seven River Hawks Earn All-Conference Honors

BOSTON – Seven River Hawks have earned 2024 America East Baseball All-Conference honors, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Graduate student Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) and sophomore Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) were named to the America East All-Conference First Team.
 
Proto has cemented himself as one of the top catchers in the conference and in UMass Lowell program history. He has hit .292 in 48 starts to go with 49 hits, 11 doubles, one triple, one home run and 28 RBI. He is 4-5 on stolen base attempts and drawn 28 walks. The Centerville native has 267 putouts on 302 chances and 30 assists for a .983 fielding percentage. He's caught 14 runners stealing, adding to his record-breaking tally.
 
Carlos Martinez burst onto the scene in his first season with the River Hawks, breaking the record for single-game home runs (3) and single-season doubles (25). The sophomore has a team-best .342 batting average and 69 hits along with 25 doubles that is tied for second in the nation. He's added five homers and a team-high 46 RBI. Martinez has 90 putouts on 96 chances with a .983 fielding percentage.
 
Seniors Zach Fortuna (Newburyport, Mass.) and Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) along with junior Alex Luccini (Hopedale, Mass.) were named to the America East All-Conference Second Team.
 
Fortuna has been outstanding in his senior season, recording an incredible 0.67 ERA in 22 appearances. He has a 4-0 record with one save in 26.2 innings, striking out 26 hitters. The senior has allowed just two earned runs in those 22 appearances, becoming one of the best shutdown pitchers in the league.
 
Fritz Genther continued to impress in his senior season, putting together an impressive highlight reel of fielding plays this year. The senior has 90 putouts and 125 assists for a .935 fielding percentage at shortstop. At the plate, Genther has tallied 42 runs, 55 hits, nine doubles, two triples, six home runs and 22 RBI for a .278 batting average. He has played and started 51 games this season and is 4-9 on stolen base attempts.
 
Alex Luccini has stepped up in a big way this year, both in the field and at the plate. The junior is second on the team with a .293 batting average, tallying 44 runs, 61 hits, 15 doubles and 39 RBI in 51 starts to go with a team-high nine home runs. In 166 chances, Luccini has 155 putouts for a .976 fielding percentage.
 
A pair of freshmen in Alfred Mucciarone (Franklin, Mass.) and Cam Sime (Pittsfield, Mass.) were named to the America East All- Rookie Team.
 
Alfred Mucciarone has made 11 appearances and 10 starts in his rookie season. He has a 7.54 ERA with a 2-3 record. In 37.0 innings, Mucciarone has struck out 26 hitters. He earned his first win of his collegiate career on February 18 at High Point and went a season-high 6.1 innings with seven strikeouts against NJIT on March 31.
 
Cam Sime has been a key figure out of the bullpen for the River Hawks and has impressed in his rookie season. The Pittsfield native has a 4.67 ERA and 1-0 record in 11 appearances this year. He has thrown 17.1 innings and struck out nine hitters. Sime earned his first collegiate win on April 16 after 5.0 innings against Merrimack.
