LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (9-16, 2-3 AE) fell to the Dartmouth Big Green (7-12, 2-4 Ivy) 7-2 on Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.
Senior
Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) led the team with three hits while junior
Conor Kelly (Hopkinton, Mass.) and sophomore
Carlos Martinez (Coamo, Puerto Rico) each tallied two hits. Kelly and Martinez tallied one RBI each.
Junior
Brendan Holland (North Andover, Mass.) got the start and went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts. Senior
Frankie Venezia (Lyndhurst, N.J.) went 2.0 innings and struck out one while junior
LJ Keevan (Holden, Mass) struck out one in 2.0 innings.
Brendan Holland threw a scoreless first and picked up his first strikeout of the afternoon. Dartmouth had a runner on third in the top of the third inning looking to take the lead, but
Carlos Martinez caught a fly ball and threw a rocket back to freshman
Scott Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) at home plate who threw the runner out at third. Holland ended the frame with his second strikeout of the day.
Conor Kelly singled to left field to score senior
Roddy Hernandez (Jersey City, N.J.) and give UMass Lowell a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Martinez followed with a two-out single to right that scored
Fritz Genther and make it 2-0.
Frankie Venezia took over in the fourth and struck out one in a 1-2-3 inning.
Dartmouth tallied two runs in the fifth to tie the game.
Carlos Martinez led the bottom of the fifth with a textbook bunt down the third base line to put a runner on early for the River Hawks. Graduate student
Ryan Proto (Centerville, Mass.) and junior
Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) followed with back-to-back singles to right field to load the bases, but all three runners were left stranded.
The Big Green took a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth behind a one-out grand slam before tacking on one more to lead by five.
LJ Keevan came in for the eighth inning and struck out one in a 1-2-3 frame.
Dartmouth held on to win 7-2. UMass Lowell returns to action on Friday afternoon at Binghamton.
