LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell baseball team (17-29, 9-12 AE) fell to the Hofstra Pride (24-24, 13-13 CAA) by a 10-4 score on Friday night at LeLacheur Park.
Sophomores
Brandon Fish (Londonderry, N.H.) and
Jacob Humphrey (Standish, Maine) had two hits each on the night. Humphrey added two runs and one RBI while junior
Fritz Genther (Kingston, N.Y.) added two hits and two RBIs.
Graduate student
Matt Draper (Lowell, Mass.) fell to 3-7 on the year after throwing 3.1 innings with four strikeouts and four earned runs. Graduate student
Zach Rodgers (Parrish, Fla..) threw the lone scoreless frame for the River Hawks on 13 pitches.
Hofstra got on the board early in the first before Humphrey answered with his seventh home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning. Much like his walk-off winner against Massachusetts, the sophomore drilled a solo shot to left field to even the score. The Pride took the lead back in the second and led 2-1 through three.
Four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth gave the visitors an 8-1 edge as the River Hawks looked for a spark. With bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, a wild pitch scored junior
Roddy Hernandez (Jersey City, N.J.) to get UMass Lowell its second run. Genther then doubled down the left field line to score two and make it four-run game.
That would be the end of the scoring for the River Hawks as Hofstra added a run in the seventh and eighth inning to extend the lead back to six runs. UMass Lowell could not find a way back into the game and fell in the series opener.
Game two is set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 13 at LeLacheur Park.
