VESTAL, N.Y. - Looking to replicate its strong showing in conference play from a season ago, the UMass Lowell men's basketball team will open its America East slate on Sunday, January 2 at Binghamton.
A WIN WOULD
A win would mark the fourth for the River Hawks against the Bearcats in the last five meetings. It would also give the team its third straight win in it America East opener.
LEADING THE FLOCK
Everette Hammond is averaging 11.3 points per game to pace the squad. Max Brooks, who adds 10.6 points, boasts a team-best 5.9 rebounds per game and 19 blocks. Justin Faison adds 35 assists and 20 steals.
LAST TIME OUT
Justin Faison and Max Brooks recorded 15 points apiece to lead UMass Lowell to a 70-62 victory against Sacred Heart in the team's first game at the Tsongas Center in almost two years. Brooks added 10 rebounds on the day for his second career double-double. Faison matched a season high with five made three-pointers to lead the team that shot a combined 54.5% (12-22) from long range in the contest. Kalil Thomas added three threes of his own en route to 11 points and a personal-best nine rebounds.
TIPPING POINT
Starting off with the ball in their hands has proved to be a recipe for success for the River Hawks this year, as the team is 8-0 so far when winning the tip.
RAISING THE BAR
UMass Lowell has set a new standard so far in 2021-22, boasting its best winning percentage (.667) through the non-conference campaign during trhe DI era and matching the most wins (8).
RAINING THREES
The River Hawks put on a show from long range in the win against Sacred Heart, sinking a season-high 12 threes for a 54.5% clip beyond the arc. Justin Faison led the way with a season-high five treys.
SHARING IS CARING
The performance against MCLA on Dec. 11 featured a program-record seven, double-digit point scorers. Eight of the team's 12 games so far have featured eight or more point scorers, including five games with at least 10 scorers.
SHARP SHOOTERS
The River Hawks, who have ranked in the top two in the America East in shooting percentage for the previous three years, are once again leading the league with a 45.6% clip. Max Brooks is pacing the conference, shooting 64.2% from the field.
TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF
Capitalizing on turnovers was not only a major part of the win at Merrimack on Dec. 4, but has been a theme throughout the season. After averaging just over 11 points off turnovers last year, the River Hawks are boasting 18.3 per game this season.
DEFENSE WINS GAMES
This year, Coach Duquette has made defense a huge point of emphasis for his program, which typically leads the America East in several offensive categories. So far, the River Hawks have only allowed more than 57 points four times this season and are second in the league in scoring defense. The team held Fisher to an all-time program-low 38 points on Nov. 27.
EARLY BIRD SPECIAL
So far this year, UMass Lowell owns a 6-0 record when leading at halftime.
