The UMass Lowell men’s basketball team turned in another solid season in 2025-26, finishing in the top four in the America East Conference standings for the third time in four years.
The River Hawks finished the campaign with a 15-18 overall record, including an impressive 9-7 mark in league play and a run to the America East Playoffs semifinals.
The team started the season on a strong note, picking up a 107-55 win against Rivier, led by senior Austin Green’s (Sicklerville, N.J.) double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Khalil Farmer (Philadelphia, Pa.) and freshman JJ Massaquoi (Prince George’s County, Md.) each added 14 points, helping UMass Lowell shoot an impressive 60% from the floor.
Forced to be road warriors for much of the non-conference slate, the River Hawks played six of their next seven games on the road, concluding a tough stretch that featured two Power Four opponents with a 75-64 victory at Stonehill on November 26. In that outing, Green and junior Xavier Spencer (Calgary, Alberta) paced the squad with 14 and 13 points, respectively, while junior Darrel Yepdo (Dracut, Mass.) notched his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Angel Montas Jr. (La Romana, D.R.) also had a strong performance, sinking a clutch three-pointer late to seal the decision.
The River Hawks exploded offensively, earning a decisive 122-73 victory at home against Fisher on December 10. The 122-point outburst marked the most points in a game for the program since 1995. Junior Jerrel Roberson II (Upper Marlboro, Md.) registered career bests of 21 points and 15 rebounds in the win.
On January 3, the River Hawks topped UAlbany by a score of 83-71, kicking off a three-game win streak to open America East Conference action. Spencer led the way with a career-high 23 points, along with six rebounds and five assists.
Montas Jr. led the charge, notching his first career 30-point performance to lift the River Hawks to a 91-77 victory against Maine on Jan. 31. UMass Lowell dominated on the glass with a 46-11 rebound advantage and shot 58% from the field in front of a sold-out crowd at Kennedy Family Athletic Complex.
The River Hawks capped off a four-game win streak with a 92-79 victory against Binghamton on February 21. Playing in front of yet another sold-out Kennedy Family Athletic Complex crowd, Montas Jr. tied his personal best with 30 points, shooting an incredible 80% from the field, while Austin Green contributed 20 points and 13 rebounds.
In a thrilling America East Playoffs quarterfinal matchup on March 7, the No. 4 River Hawks overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to defeat No. 5 UAlbany, 81-76. Montas Jr. ignited a crucial 16-1 run that was capped off by a massive dunk and three-pointer from freshman Victor Okojie (Castlebar, Ireland) and an and-1 from Spencer. The performance, which propelled the team to its third semifinal appearance in four years, marked the first time since 2021 that the River Hawks have overcome a 12-point, second-half deficit.
Just three days later, the No. 4 River Hawks hit the road to Baltimore to take on No.1 UMBC in the America East Semifinals. Montas Jr. finished with 20 points and Yepdo collected 15 points in the River Hawks’ final outing.
As a team, the River Hawks led the America East in rebound margin (+4.5), offensive rebounds per game (12.3) and total rebounds per game (37.45).
Individually, three River Hawks earned 2026 America East Conference All-Conference honors, led by Angel Montas Jr. with a First Team selection, while Austin Green and Xavier Spencer were both named to the Third Team.
Montas Jr. posted a career-high 15.8 points on 51% shooting. A three-time America East Player of the week, he logged a personal-best 33 points at Maine to close the regular season. Green made an immediate impact in Lowell, starting 24 of 25 games, while averaging 13.8 points on a team-best 58.9% shooting. He also led the team with 8.0 rebounds per game with a team-high eight double-doubles on the year. Spencer averaged 11.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists as a River Hawk, while leading the team with 1.2 steals per game. Starting every game and logging a team-high 33.6 minutes, he served as a key piece of the team’s offense throughout the season.
