River Hawks Stumble in the First, Bounce Back in the Second

BALTIMORE, Md. -- After the UMass Lowell River Hawks (2-9, 1-1 AE) dropped a quick paced pitcher's duel, 3-2, in the first game of a doubleheader with the UMBC Retrievers (6-1, 1-1 AE), the offense exploded in the second game, with the River Hawks earning a touchdown victory, 21-14.

Senior Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) had a seven-hit day, driving in six with three doubles between the two games, while every River Hawk in the line-up recorded at least one hit and one run scored in the second game.

The River Hawks fell down early in the first game, as UMBC jumped out to an early lead, using the long ball. They scored two in the first on a Christian Torres home run and added a run in the third on a lead-off shot by Ian Diaz.

UMass Lowell would begin chipping away at the Retriever lead in the fourth. Junior Robert Gallagher (Mullica Hill, N.J.) led off the frame with a double and came around to score on a single down the left field line by Martin.

The same duo would combine to cut the deficit to one in the sixth inning. Gallagher worked a one-out walk and stole second. Martin followed with a two-out single to bring the River Hawks within a run, but the visitors went down in order in the seventh for the 3-2 final.

Redshirt senior Collin Duffley (Manchester, N.H.) (0-3) settled in after the first two, keeping the River Hawks in the game going the next four scoreless. He went the distance, allowing the three runs on four hits, striking out three.

The River Hawks came out firing on all cylinders in the second game, with a Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass.) two-run home run highlighting a three run first.

After UMBC pulled even with three in the bottom half of the first, the River Hawks added two in the second and six in the third, as Martin and senior Joey Castellanos (Nutley, N.J.) picked up RBI in each inning.

The Retrievers got five in the fifth, making it a 13-9 game, but the River Hawks responded with two in the sixth, three in seventh and three in the eighth, ignoring Retriever rallies as they came, for a 21-14 final.

Offensively in game two, Martin (5-for-6, three doubles, 4 RBI) and Climo (4-for-6, two doubles, home run, 4 RBI) paced the offense, with junior Gerry Siracusa (Kinelon, N.J.) and sophomore Keagan Calero (Rochester, N.H.) each hitting their first collegiate home run.

Sophomore Cam Seguin (Woburn, Mass.) (1-2) picked up the win in game two, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, striking out three, while junior Sal Fusco (Colonie, N.Y.) closed out the win with 2.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

The two teams are right back at it tomorrow afternoon for another twin bill. First pitch of Game One is scheduled for noon from Alumni Field.
