CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – No. 1 Boston College netted three power play goals to pace the Eagles in a 7-1 win against the UMass Lowell men's hockey team on Friday night at the Conte Forum.
With the decision, the River Hawks are now 4-6-0 overall on the year, while the Eagles improve their record to 12-3-1.
"We ran into a very difficult opponent," commented Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "We weren't ready to play in those first couple shifts and unfortunately we made it way too easy for the opponent to score tonight. There's not much good I can take from this game, but that's hockey, you have to put a lineup together tomorrow and be ready to go at it again."
BC set the tempo early, jumping out to an early, 1-0 lead after Drew Helleson used a screen down front to bury a shot at 16:27.
UMass Lowell's tally came less than a minute after the Eagles' first strike when sophomore
Zach Kaiser (Orangeville, Ontario) fed a pass through the slot to junior
Lucas Condotta (Georgetown, Ontario), who capitalized on a shorthanded goal for the River Hawk equalizer at 15:40.
Boston College then took a 5-1 lead in the middle stanza on goals by Alex Newhook, Casey Carreau and Matt Boldy at 0:26, 12:03 and 14:41, respectively. UMass Lowell outshot the Eagles, 16-14, in the second period.
Newhook continued the scoring into the final frame with a goal at 18:43, and Mike Hardman capped off the game's scoring for the Eagles with a goal at the 7:32 mark of the third period.
BC outshot UMass Lowell, 55-48. The River Hawks held Boston College scoreless on 2-of-5 power-play opportunities. The River Hawks were 0-for-3 on the power play.
UMass Lowell goalkeeper
Henry Welsch (Lakeville, Minn.) started the game and recorded 25 saves through the first two periods. He was replaced by
Logan Neaton (Brighton, Mich.), who saved eight shots in the final frame. BC's Spencer Knight recorded 29 saves during the full 60 minutes in net.
The River Hawks finish the two-game series with BC tomorrow, February 13. Game time from Tsongas Center is 6 p.m.
