River Hawks Fight Hard But Drop Both Ends of Hartford Twin Bill

Story Links

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- The UMass Lowell baseball team dropped a pair of highly contested games in Saturday's doubleheader at Hartford, as the hosts were able to take the series after dropping Friday's opener.

All six River Hawk (11-34, 6-12) runs were scored by a different player, and Oscar Marchena (Miami, Fla.) recorded four hits on the day. The Hawks (16-28, 8-9) scored first in both games and saw the pair of Jackson Olson and John Thrasher both drive in three in the twin bill, as the hosts took game one 7-3 and the finale 5-3.

GAME 1
Behind a solo home run in the bottom of the first, the hosts started where they left off in the bottom of the 10th in the opener, but Michael Young (Chester, N.J.) drove in Marchena with a one out single in the second to pull even.

Trailing by one in the fourth, Ciaran Devenney (Manalapan, N.J.) tripled home Young and scored on a wild pitch to give UMass Lowell a 3-2 advantage, but the Hawks would plate four in the bottom half to seize control with a 6-3 buffer.

Kendall Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass.) extended his program record with his 27th appearance of the season, scattering four hits with three strikeouts in five innings out of the bullpen. Marchena picked up two of his hits in effort to pace the UMass Lowell lineup.

GAME 2
Hartford broke open a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth and added another three in the fifth to pick up the series clinching victory in the seven-inning contest. Olsen delivered the key two-run double in the fifth that ultimately was the difference as the River Hawks had a rally cut short in the seventh.

In the final inning , UMass Lowell had runners on second and third with one out before consecutive hits from Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J.) and Kyle Maurice (Exeter, N.H.) plated both runs and cut the gap to 5-2. A wild pitch Maurice but the River Hawks could not complete the comeback.

UMass Lowell will host UMBC for Senior Weekend on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a pregame graduation ceremony on Saturday, and before Sunday's game the 13 seniors will be honored on Senior Day.
