BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Junior forward
Chris Schutz (Keller, Texas) scored a career-high two goals and three points to lead the No. 17 ranked UMass Lowell Hockey team to 5-3 road win at Vermont on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Hockey East play.
The River Hawks improved their record to 6-2-2 overall (3-0-1 HEA) with the weekend sweep, while the Catamounts drop to 1-5-0 overall (0-3-0 HEA).
"It's a tough sweep in a tough environment, so I was real proud of the guys," said UMass Lowell Head Coach
Norm Bazin. "I thought they upped their game from yesterday, blocked shots were better, the face-offs were better and the overall alertness."
Vermont's Alex Esposito added a goal with less than three minutes to go to make it 4-3, but freshman forward
Brian Chambers (Weymouth, Mass.) added an empty netter late to seal the win for the River Hawks for his first collegiate tally.
Sophomore blueliner
Chase Blackmun (Hudson, Wis.) added his second tally of the year to give the River Hawks a 4-2 lead on a blast from the high slot.
Schutz scored another to give UMass Lowell a 3-1 lead but Vermont answered less than a minute later on Andrew Lucas' first career tally for the Catamounts to make it a 3-2 contest in favor of the River Hawks.
Sophomore forward
Sam Knoblauch (Rochester, Mich.) helped the River Hawks regain a 2-1 lead with his first goal of the season just 48 seconds after Vermont tied the game.
Christian Evers tied the game at 1-1 for the Catamounts just one minute into the middle stanza.
Schutz scored the first goal of the contest just 4:11 into the opening stanza as he roofed it over the shoulder of UVM goalie Stefanos Lekkas. Schutz's goal was the second of the season and the eighth of his River Hawk career.
Senior goalie
Tyler Wall (Leamington, Ont.) recorded 30 saves in his sixth win of the season for UMass Lowell. Lekkas finished the night with 22 stop for Vermont in the loss.
The River Hawks were a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill on the evening.
